That Awkward Moment When...

You receive a text from that guy you've been batting your lashes at. He wants to meet up.  OMG how exciting is that?  Then the rest of the text message comes through, and you realize that it wasn't what you thought it was.  It typically goes a little something like this:

Hey. How's it going.  We should get together next week.

Your heart's fluttering a little and that smile spreads across your lips.  Yeah, you know what smile I'm talking about.  Only - the excitement fades with the second vibration of your phone.

We need to talk about the formatting of our next project to help us get on the same page.  TTYS

Ouch!  Hopefully you didn't reply before the second message came through.  If so, the phrase "damn autocorrect" covers just about everything.  If only we weren't limited to 160 characters when sending to other phone carriers.  If only...

Do I know you from somewhere.jpg

You see someone whom you briefly talked to online/over the phone in the grocery store (or some other public place).  He walks up to you and says, "Don't I know you from somewhere?"  One could certainly say, "Sure - we met on Plenty of Fish a couple of years ago.  We talked on the phone once and you never called again.  I took an inkblot test shortly thereafter and they said I was normal, so I don't know what your problem is."

On second thought, that's probably not the best course of action.

I made a few broad statements to clue him in on who I was. No dice.  He gave me his card, and asked that I sent him a friend request on Facebook.  Now it's my turn to be the flake. #karma #yeahbaby #imnotcallinghim

How would you react if this happened to you?

You see someone you know from a somewhat nontraditional setting (ahem) in a professional environment.  This happened to me just the other day.  A few months back, I gracefully strutted my stuff in a date auction for charity.  Fast forward seven months, and a familiar face greeted me at an offsite training.  Another participant from the auction visited my classroom as a silent observer.

What does one do when confronted with this situation?  Most people would suggest feigning ignorance...and that's probably the best option. I, on the other hand, couldn't help myself.  I walked up to my fellow auctionee (not a real word, but work with me here) and whispered, "Were you in that Date Auction back in February?"  He smiled and whispered back, "Yes, were you?"  I nodded.  As it turns out, we are both still single and prepared to strut our stuff on the auction block again this February.  Anything for charity :-)
